China to enter discussions with Malaysia & Vietnam on continental shelf: PM
TQ tiến hành thảo luận với Malaysia và Việt Nam về thềm lục địa :
JEJU ISLAND (South Korea):
CHINA, which had opposed the joint submission on the continental shelf by Malaysia and Vietnam, will be engaged in a discussion to resolve the dispute, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said today.
Najib said the joint submission will not affect Malaysia-China bilateral relations. “We acknowledge that there are differences in opinions on the claims from China and the Philippines but we (Malaysia and Vietnam) are comfortable for this to be resolved according to international maritime laws,” he told a news conference here on his bilateral meeting with Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on the sidelines of the 20th Asean-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit. Early last month, Malaysia and Vietnam made a joint submission on the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS). The joint submission came about one week before the May 13 deadline set by the United Nations for countries to submit claims over extended continental shelves. China has protested to the UN on the joint submission, claiming that it infringed upon the republic’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in the South China Sea.
The location of the edge of the continental shelf has a bearing on the extent of national waters. China is claiming the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles that included parts of the East China Sea. Najib said the joint submission was a result of excellent relations between Malaysia and Vietnam. During the bilateral meeting, Najib said Nguyen encouraged Malaysia to develop industrial parks in Vietnam like what Singapore had done.“He is satisfied with the level of interests shown by Malaysian investors in Vietnam. There is already a huge Malaysian investment in a hotel project in Hanoi, which will be managed by the Inter-Continental Group,” Naib said of his discussions with his Vietnam counterpart. Earlier, Najib toured Berjaya Group’s 73-hectare resort development project in Seogwipo City, southwest of the island. Berjaya’s investment is the single largest Malaysian investment on the island. The development comprises 1,282 residences, including villas and apartments, a casino, two hotels, a shopping mall, an indoor arena as well as valley and wellness resorts. The project, with a gross development value of US$1.5 billion (RM5.2 billion) is targeted for completion in 2015.
