-China closes 60,000 "pornographic" websites DPABeijing - China has closed some 60,000 websites with content deemed pornographic this year, the government said on Thursday.

Internet censors deleted about 350 million documents, photographs and videos that they considered 'pornographic or vulgar' during a one-year campaign, Wang Chen, director of the State Council Information Office, told reporters.

The campaign led to police investigations of 2,197 criminal cases and the punishment of 4,965 people, including prison sentences of more than five years for 58 people, Wang said.

'The hard-won achievements further purified the internet,' he said.

Wang did not mention any sensitive political content, but government campaigns against online pornography usually target all 'unhealthy' content, which includes political views that differ from those of the ruling Communist Party.

The Great Firewall prevents the country's estimated 450 million internet users from accessing hundreds of international websites that are deemed politically sensitive, pornographic or otherwise problematic.

In June, an official report setting policies for management of the internet said the posting of political content 'endangering state security' or 'subverting state power' would continue to be defined as a criminal act.

In January, US internet giant Google Inc diverted its main Chinese website to an uncensored one in Hong Kong after it discovered cyber attacks that originated in China and targeted Google servers as well as those of other Western companies.

Google said the attacks, in which the Chinese government denied any involvement, included attempts to compromise Chinese human rights activists' email accounts.
